Michael HutchinsonMike Hutchinson retired from the City of Mesa in December of 2005 after more than 28 years of service. He started with the City as an Administrative Intern in 1977 and served in increasingly responsible administrative positions prior to be appointed Assistant City Manager in January of 1981. Mike served in this capacity until March of 2000 when he was appointed City Manager by the Mayor and City Council. As City Manager he was responsible for implementing policies established by the City Council, management of the City operations, and preparation of the annual City operating and capital budgets. Mike also represented the City on a number of local and regional boards and committees. During his tenure with Mesa, the City grew from a population of approximately 100,000 residents in 1977 to over 450,000 residents in 2005.

Mr. Hutchinson is a member of the International City/County Management Association as well as the Arizona City/County Management Association. He served as President of the Arizona City/County Management Association in 2005, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of a number of groups including the Mesa United Way, the Mesa Foundation for Educational Excellence, the Mesa Community Action Network Agency and the Morrison Institute for Public Policy at Arizona State University. During his professional career Mike received several awards, including the 2006 Arizona City/County Management John J. DeBolske Professional Excellence Award, and was inducted into the College of Public Programs Hall of Fame at Arizona State University in 2003. He was recently named the Mesa Chamber of Commerce 2006 recipient of the 21st Century Business Leadership Award for the public sector.

Mike was born and grew up in the Syracuse New York area and graduated in 1975 from the State University of New York at Oswego with a degree in History. He earned a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Arizona State University in December of 1977. Mike is married to Marcie, a retired Red Mountain High School teacher. They have two daughters; Erin and Mary Beth. In his retirement Mike hopes to travel and remain active in the Mesa through volunteer activities and service on community boards and committees.
